FAQ

What is Yoga?
Yoga is an ancient tradition and science dedicated to helping individuals lead happier, healthier lives. The practice cultivates a connection between body, breath and mind. This connection leads to both physical and more deeply-rooted, energetic benefits. Yoga helps us to become more aware and more mindful. The practice leads us towards discovery of the deepest layers of the Self.

What is Hatha Yoga?
Hatha refers to any part of a yoga practice that deals with the physical body. In our classes, Hatha refers to the practice of asana (yoga postures) and pranayama (breath control). Any yoga style that deals with the physical body has it’s roots in Hatha Yoga. Hatha, when translated, means Sun (Ha) and Moon (Tha). The word therefore connotes balance. Each of our Hatha classes is a balanced practice of movement and breath.

How often should I practice yoga?
The more you practice, the more yoga will positively influence your body and your life. And the more you see this positive influence, the more you will want to practice! Many people start with a once per week practice, but quickly increase this to three or more classes per week. Eventually you may find yourself practicing every day, although this practice may not always happen in class. Even just a few Sun Salutations or energetic asanas (postures) practiced in the morning will help you start your day with positive energy and mindfulness.

I’ve never done yoga. How can I get started?
The best way to get started is to just get started! Jump the first hurdle and get yourself to a yoga class for beginners (our Yoga 101 course is a great place to start). For your first class you should arrive at least 15 minutes early and take a few moments to talk to the instructor. Tell the teacher about any pre-existing medical conditions and discuss any hesitations you are feeling about trying yoga. Giving yourself time to settle in before class will help you feel more comfortable in the studio environment and will ensure both you and the teacher are prepared for the class.

What should I bring to class?
You should bring a yoga mat if you have one. If not, you can rent one at the studio for $2+tax. You may want to bring water to sip on before and after class (although generally not during). Wear comfortable clothing that is form-fitting (baggy clothes can get in the way of your movements). Yoga is practiced in bare feet so you needn’t worry about proper footwear.

How do I register for your classes?
Most of our classes are drop-in, which means you do not need to register. Just show up for class at least 15 minutes early if it’s your first time or you need to buy a pass. Otherwise arriving 5-10 minutes early is appropriate. Some specialty classes do require registration (you’ll notice “Pre-reg” written under the class name on the schedule). All workshops require pre-registration. In this case you should call or come by the studio to sign up. Depending on the class or workshop, a deposit or full payment will be required upon registration. Once paid, a space will be held for you. Limited space is available for these classes and workshops and they are filled on a first come, first served basis.

How can I pay?
We accept Visa, Master Card, debit and cash.

Can I come into class late?
If the reception area is open, yes you can. However during the day, on the weekends and at various other times the reception area is closed and the main door is locked at class start time. It is a good idea to assume this to be the case and arrive at least 5 minutes early. To check reception operation times see Hours of Operation.

Can my pre-teen or teenage child come to class with me?
We do not have a minimum age for our classes so yes, your child can attend. However, the practice of yoga is quiet and contemplative and our classes reflect this. So children and teenagers who attend must be comfortable in this quiet, focused and generally adult environment. Parents will be required to sign a Student Waiver Agreement on behalf of the child.
